Since returning to freelancing full-time in January of this year, I've been really blessed with being in an area with some other great photographers, both staff and freelance. I feel like I'm in a great market and I'm really lucky to have been welcomed into the community here in the Tampa Bay area like I have been.
This work is a cross section of assignments, some are more visual than others but I've always enjoyed seeing what other photographers are shooting on a daily basis rather than seeing only the work in their portfolios. Some of these are magazine assignments but most are newspaper assignments from the St. Petersburg Times, The Wall Street Journal and The Boston Globe.

Boca Life Magazine- An editor I know and love in Ft. Lauderdale still asks me to come photograph assignments for her every so often and I happily do when I can. This was a great story about Natasha, a 19-year-old tennis player at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton. I made documentary images of her and teammates and family. Before packing up and calling it a day, we headed over to the tennis courts where we made these portraits. I love documentary work but every now and then it's really fun to light some portraits. Not to mention, Natasha turned out to be a really amazing person- it was one of those assignments that when I left, I felt like my life had really been enriched.
The Wall Street Journal- I love getting calls from the editors at WSJ. They always have great assignments and this one was no different. Jan Amara filed a lawsuit against Cigna in 2001. A unanimous decision by the Supreme Court told a lower court to reexamine the way it arrived at the penalty for Cigna. The court had decided the company misled it's employees about their pensions and benefits. I felt like I could have stayed and talked to her all day. I could tell that she had an amazing story. She was just one of those people that is incredibly easy to talk to. Again, it was one of those assignments that when I left, I felt blessed for having been let into her life, if only for only a morning.
The Wall Street Journal
The Wall Street Journal- As I mentioned before, I always love working for the WSJ. However, this assignment was harder than it looked. The pictures were for a story about the privatization of the post-NASA space industry. It was probably one of the coolest and most visual stories I have worked on in quite some time. What made this story so difficult to illustrate was that most of what I photographed turned out to be top-secret! I had to have some genuinely very nice people (not kidding, they were super nice) go through my edit when I was done shooting and tell me what could and could not be published. And so it went that most of my favorite pictures could not be published. All-in-all it was a pretty sweet experience but it's never fun to tell your editors that you don't feel as if you're showing them your best work.
The Wall Street Journal- Surprise! Nothing in this photo is top-secret!
The Wall Street Journal- Recently laid off from his position as a project manager in the aerospace industry, Bill Bender, 56, is going back to school to study legal mediation. In his spare time he likes to garden with his wife, Lois.
Personal- So I finally watched a shuttle launch! (actually I spent most of the time behind the camera). It was kind of funny. I was going through my edit and was like, "Wow, this looked amazing!" and realized that I hadn't taken any time to step back and watch the launch for myself.
The Wall Street Journal- Susan Reboyras' chocolate lab, Lucy, runs in the front yard. Reboyras has been working out of her home in St. Petersburg for six years and employes about 10 people. Her home has been in foreclosure since June of 2009.

St. Petersburg Times- I realize that this picture is not particularly advanced in any way, shape or form. It does, however, make me laugh. So... there it is. Hope it puts a smile on your face.
